Stroke Ratios

The Bore & Stroke

The engine capacity is measured as Bore x Stroke. Here, Bore is the diameter of the cylindrical block and Stroke is the depth of the cylindrical block, as shown in the image.
When stroke/bore value is over 1:1 the engine is long-stroke or undersquare and when the stroke/bore value is under 1:1 the engine is short-stroke or oversquare. The square engine has a value of 1:1 in both cases.
For example an engine with 110 millimetres (4.33 in) stroke and 80 millimetres (3.15 in) bore, stroke/bore value 1.375, is an undersquare or long-stroke engine. An engine that has 70 millimetres (2.76 in) stroke and 100 millimetres (3.94 in) bore, stroke/bore value 0.7, is oversquare or short-stroke

The Working Cycle Of IC Engines

The Working Cycle

Stroke:
If an engine has to work successfully then it has to follow a cycle of operations in a sequential manner. The sequence is quite ridged and it cannot be changed.

"Stroke" refers to the movement of the piston in the engine. 2 Stroke means one stroke in each direction. A 2 stoke engine will have a compression stroke followed by an explosion of the compressed fuel. On the return stroke new fuel mixture is inserted into the cylinder.

Engine Basics - The Basic Frame Work Of Engines..

ENGINEs
Engines are everywhere, It makes our lives simpler and faster everyday. It makes our complex tasks into simpler  & easier one. Our world comes to halt if there are no engines. It helps humans in innumerable ways, and at last made the mankind to reach the sky even to the space.

To say about an engine it is a device that converts one form of energy to another form. Mainly the engines function by employing the thermal energy or heat energy to useful mechanical work.
These engines can be broadly classified into two types,
1. External combustion engines [EC Engines]
2. Internal combustion engines [IC Engines]
