Besides that there are lot of standards followed world wide ( JASO, API, etc..,) regarding the manufacturing and usage of engine oils for different type of engines according to usage, the climatic conditions and other factors. We here don't want to get deep about the types and usage of engine oils.
Mineral type:
The mineral type of engine oils are the cheapest among the three categories. This type of engine oil is manufactured from the refining of petroleum in oil refineries and in petrochemical industries. They are purely derived from the fossil fuels like crude oil.
Synthetic type:
The synthetic type are the costliest among the three categories. They are manufactured artificially. Synthetic oil is used as a substitute for lubricant refined from petroleum when operating in extremes of temperature, because, in general, it provides superior mechanical and chemical properties than those found in traditional mineral oils.
