Spark Plugs:



Spark plugs are used to ignite the compressed air fuel mixture in SI engine during the compression cycle. The better ignition of fuel with better timing of ignition increases the performance and mileage. A poor condition spark plug will decrease engine efficiency and power.

So sparks plugs are always among the important performance components of all time. The better ignition of fuel provides the better performance of engine.

Ordinary spark plugs:

Ordinary spark plugs use copper, nickel-iron, chromium to make the electrode. They are manufactured for optimum performance not for high performance.

For improving the performance iridium spark plugs can be used. NGK and Denso are the famous brands manufacturing the iridium plugs. The high performance spark plugs were also made from other metals like platinum, Tungsten etc. All high performance motorcycles and cars use these iridium spark plugs.

Iridium Properties

Difference between ordinary spark plugs and Iridium spark plugs:

The ordinary spark plugs do not provide a constant spark area, the spark area deviates during the sparking. By using an iridium spark plug it provides consistent spark and also withstands high temperatures. It lasts longer than an ordinary spark plugs and also improves the performance.

Iridium Plugs promote a faster expansion of the flame upon ignition than nickel type plugs, and they show exceptional combustion efficiency. With excellent discharge characteristics and strong combustion they bring out the maximum performance from the engine, achieving an improved level of acceleration.

The ultra-fine center electrode has excellent discharge characteristics. As a result the electric field strength is strong and the environment is such that sparks can form easily. This makes stronger sparks possible at a low voltage that does not impose a load on the battery and improves the starting characteristics at low speed and the response during acceleration.
